Micah Byrne Joins the Matix
Surf Team!
Matix is pleased to announce the addition of Micah Byrne
to its surf team. The 24-year old Huntington Beach native
has five NSSA Titles to his credit and has developed into
one of America’s top pros. Earlier this month, Byrne
helped Huntington Surf & Sport finish third in the
Surf Shop Challenge National Championships in Oceanside.
“I’m so stoked to be with Matix, they a have
a great young program and I’m excited to grow with
them,” Byrne said. “Micah is a great addition
to our surf program and he will no doubt help us in our
branding efforts on all fronts,” Matix Surf Brand
Manager, Brandy Faber said. Bryne will be focusing on
photo, video projects and winning the domestic surf tour
in 2007. He will also be in charge of the two new Podium
Honda Aquatrax’s that will be used towards his efforts
and for all team purposes. Look for Micah’s first
Matix ad, which will be dropping in October. |

of Surfshot Magazine from a recent trip to Indo with photographer,
David Troyer. The 19-year old Whitlock is also featured
inside the issues profile on San Diego’s best surfers

Pono Barnes Wins Matix “Go
for the Gusto!” Contest
16-year old Pono Barnes from Redondo Beach, California
has been announced the winner of the Matix “Go for
the Gusto!” contest. Matix sent out cutouts of Gusto
Gav to hundreds of surf shops and encouraged kids to go
grab “Gusto” from their local shop and have
some fun with him.
Pono, lifted “Gusto” from his local shop,
Spyder Surf in Hermosa Beach and took “Gusto”
to every school function imaginable. Pono and Gusto at
prom, at pep rallies, with the cheer squad, at parties
and even in the classroom studying. “I had an awesome
time with Pono at his high school. He introduced me to
sooo many chicks and even got me a prom date,” said
Gusto. “I never had any of those experiences growing
up on my little island in the south pacific, thanks Pono!”
Gusto added.
The contest ran from May 1st – July 4th with contestants
e-mailing their photos to Matix, where they were posted
in the “Gusto Gallery” on the Matix website.
The selection process was easy as Pono “crushed”
all competition with his efforts.
Pono’s winning photos are featured in the September
Matix ad in the Happy back-to-school edition and can also
